Dave is a local Bay Area Native having been born in Los Gatos and raised in Campbell. Dave graduated from Prospect High School and attended the University of Alabama on a swimming scholarship. Dave lives in Campbell, is married and has 3 wonderful daughters. Dave loves to travel to Kauai to swim, body surf, snorkel, hike, & zodiac raft with his family.
Dave has a long history with Santa Clara Swim Club starting as an age group swimmer from 1982-1992. He represented SCSC at 12 National Championships and 1 Olympic Trials. During his time at SCSC, Dave was a member of the USA Swimming National Junior Team, was a multiple CIF & NCAA All - American, as well as a finalist for SCSC at several National Championships. In Dave’s final competitive season with the club, SCSC won the Men’s National Championship.
As a Coach, Dave has been with SCSC since 1995. As a young coach, Dave helped SCSC win 4 National Championships while watching and learning as SCSC’s Tom Wilkins made the 2000 USA Olympic Team. Dave has coached all levels and groups during his time at SCSC, including masters. Dave’s swimmers have achieved A Time Standards to Olympic Trial Time Standards, National Age Group Record holders to athletes hoping to make Varsity for their high school swim team. Dave considers them all equally important and impressive.
Dave was a high school coach for 10 years coaching both girls and boys swimming at Prospect & Westmont High Schools respectfully. During this time Dave compiled a 103-11 record with 15 BVAL Championships with numerous CCS qualifiers and finalists.
Coach Dave wants to coach athletes to become the best swimmers that they can be no matter their ability level with hard work, proper stroke technique and smart swimming. To allow swimmers to be themselves while providing a fun & safe environment to thrive in. Dave’s philosophy when it comes to coaching at SCSC is to maintain the excellence of the Santa Clara Swim Club and honor the legacy of Coach George Haines.
Dave has coached hundreds of Far Western Qualifiers, dozens of Junior National Qualifiers, several National and Olympic Trials Qualifiers. Many of these athletes were finalists at these swim meets. Dave has served on Pacific Swimming Coaching Staffs at Western Zones, All-Stars and various Select Zone Camps. Dave has been nominated Pacific Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year multiple times. Dave is also a 4-time BVAL Coach of the Year for high school swimming.
Dave is the youngest of 4 boys. Dave is also a big fan of Duke Kahanamoku, the inventor of the flutter kick in swimming and multiple Olympian & Gold medal winner as well as the father of modern surfing. Duke is considered the greatest Waterman ever.
